Media City Salford Sound Symposium

In July 2022 Linda was asked to present a keynote talk on her research with women in sound and to launch the GAIA website at the Sound Symposium Media City Salford. This was a fantastic opportunity to have sound and media professionals engage with our interactive website and get some feedback on the design, particularly the soundscape design and the recorded narratives.  Thye audience consisted of students working in game sound technology, sound interraction and design, alongside researchers, professors and […]

In June 2022 we presented a talk on the development of the GAIA website, ‘Evolving Ourselves with Unnatural Selection: Creating a Better You‘ for the Sound Re-dug festival at the Bidsten Observatory in Liverpool. BO is a self-organising, communal study site that focuses on providing individual users and groups with a temporary place  to develop projects that require time and space in a flexible, non-pressured environment. Sound Design for our Biodomes

We’ve been looking at how we can create a soundscape for each of our domes which reflect the themes within. This is quite a difficult concept as we are exploring 5 very complex ideas: curing diseases, eradicating diseases, making a better version of you, editing and adapting species for climate change and resurrecting extinct species. So how do you create a soundscape for these themes in our domes. Linda has been working with the scenarios we are creating for the […]

Finally Getting Together

So we just completed our first residency get together, as a research team, to begin to design and develop the next stage of our project, the online interactive questionnaire. We spent three days in a remote location in the Yorkshire Moors talking, walking, eating and working together. It felt both normal and really weird to be in person and not looking at each other on a screen (we hadn’t seen each other IRL for nearly two year, TWO YEARS)… This […]

Three Focus Groups Complete!!!

We are so happy at this point to have completed three of our five focus groups, and oh yes, did they raise some extremely, extraordinary subjects. We knew this was a deeply controversial subject matter, and right in the middle of a global pandemic where information is coming at us from all sides. However, I don’t think we were expecting some of the conversations that emerged as a result of our questions. But we have been forced to reconsider […]

Sketching Ideas and Drawings

Learning to Draw the Platonic solids,       For inspiration and to start to get our heads out of the theory, books and analysis, we have started to explore game concepts and interraction for our future online interactive space (Think the team in The Big Bang). Our game theory person, Ashley, has been leading us on a journey of the history and comtemporary world of multi person game play spaces, both on and offline. This led to some thoughts […]

Developing the Focus Group

Developing the focus group questions We have spent the past two months creating a set of questions for our 5 focus groups. We plan on working with groups located in a variety of areas, and have set up a number of collaborative partnerships to help us with that. We are working with ROTA (Race on the Agenda), GA (Genetic Alliance), our own networks for an artist led focus group, and with the IGC (International Genetics and Cancer research unit). We […]

Science Fact and Fiction

Talking, reading and more talking This project began with a set of objectives, the primary one being to educate ourselves about a particular area of science, gene editing technology, to understand the ethics surrounding this scientific research, and how scientific discoveries/research etc., is communicated to different publics. We also wanted to explore how science has been told through fiction from comics to films and novels, as a lot of people become interested in the sciences or learn some of their […]
